director's notes
The farm has always been part of my life. I remember playing with my sister while my father was working, making up fictional worlds: a neighbor’s farm could be an imposing commercial city, a small granary the place where a powerful wiseman lived and the old trailer, a fierce warship. I miss those moments and that feeling has been one of the main pushes so as to do this film, but now I am playing with the western genre in its twilight stage.*
This time, the farms and warehouses are old ranches ruled by weary cowboys, aware of the fact that their time is gone and they have been left behind, overwhelmed by progress and the new rising generation of the big farming industry. These little peasants, like a western hero, were the ones in charge of bringing the “idea of progress” to the area, but once it was done, they were left in the margins and doomed to disappear.
Nowadays in the farm my father is the only worker and, when he retires, no one will go on with it. It will be the end of three generations of farmers who inhabited that place. Remainders is an acid and cheerful goodbye letter to a time that, like many others, history will leave behind.
